Our Founders

Baker and Baker Real Estate Developers was started in the 1950's by "first cousins", David and Lee J. Baker. Both partners completed law school at the University of South Carolina and practiced law for many years. The partners began developing office buildings throughout the East Coast for GMAC, Western Union, Western Southern Life Insurance Company, Life of Virginia and Southern Bell.

In 1963, the firm developed its first retail project in Columbia for S.S. Kresge for a one-stop discount store called K-Mart. The partnership has since developed 22 stores in four Southeastern states.

Although David Baker passed away in 2003 and Lee J. Baker died in 2004, Baker and Baker remains a family business. The management of the company was transferred to John Baker, son of David Baker, and Steven Anastasion, Lee J. Baker's son-in-law.
